Porter's Chatswood Imported Wines Expo - 2005 Burgundies

Wine Tasting Event - Imported Wines - 2005 Burgundies - Chatswood, North Shore, Sydney

In April, 2008, Porter's Liquor Chatswood, Sydney, held an International Wine Expo in their on-site wine tasting room, featuring over 45 wines from around the world, including the fabled 2005 Burgundies.

Well over 100 wine lovers got the opportunity to taste a broad range of imported wines and to discuss and learn about those wines from knowledgeable wine industry people.

2005 Burgundies
The 2005 Burgundies are rated by many as perhaps the best Burgundy vintage in 20 years.

"Getting to know French wines, for example, can be a complicated affair with many Appellations and even more Domains for people to get their heads around. And of course the wine styles are quite different to those of Australian wines, so our imported wine tasting events are a fabulous introduction for many."

"Our International Wine Expo was a great success, with wines such as the Simmonet-Febvre petit Chablis 2006 and the Marc Bredif Vouvray 1995 both big hits with those who attended."

"We try to stock a range of imported wines that we feel are representative of the various regions and styles of key overseas wine producing countries such as France, Italy and Spain. We then offer the advice to our clients that many need to get started in their appreciation of imported wines."

"Our customers are often surprised to find imported wines at price points that in many cases offer as good, if not better, value than Australian wines of comparable quality."    -    Sandy McKenzie, owner of Porter's Liquor Chatswood, Sydney.

2005 Burgundies

2005 Burgundies tasting
Wine tastings are a regular event in the Imported Wine Room at Porter's Liquor in Chatswood.

The Expo featured wines from Guigal, Georges DeBoeuf, Gosset, Denis Pommier, Gatinois and many others. A real feature was the opportunity to taste some 2005 Burgundies, rated by many as perhaps the best Burgundy vintage in 20 years.

2005 is an extraordinary year for red wines in both the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. Thick grape skins and ripe pips has given great colour and ripe tannins to these refreshingly mineral and marvellously structured wines. These factors set 2005 apart from other years and most certainly pushes it above the famous 1990 and 1999 vintages.

The white wines have a terrific sense of energy and, despite the weight that comes with really concentrated fruit, are never heavy and finish with refreshing minerality. A significant number of growers have made their best wines in many years.

With demand already strong for the 05 Burgundies, prices have risen, but there is great value to be had in some of the less famous appellations such as Côte de Nuits-Villages, Santenay, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-lès-Beaune, and Marsannay.

Porter's Liquor in Chatswood, Sydney, stock a number of very accessible 2005 Burgundies and offer appropriate buying guidance and imported wine advice for people at all levels of wine appreciation from connoisseurs right through to those very new to wine.
