SAKARI TEPPANYAKI RESTAURANT - WILLOUGHBY

Teppanyaki is a Japanese word meaning “iron griddle” (teppan) and “fry” (yaki). The origin of teppanyaki ("iron plate cooking") - the method of cooking food on a large hot iron plate in front the customers' eyes - started 50 years ago in Kobe, a port town in the southern part of Japan. Teppanyaki customers selected the fresh ingredients they wanted from a case placed behind the teppan, then the chef would cook it in view of the customer.

This new teppanyaki style was a mixture of robatayaki (Japanese-style barbecue also cooked in front of customers) and sushi restaurants (which features a fresh ingredients case). Teppanyaki has since became very popular and has developed into a highly refined and beautiful form of expression, characterised by an intricate combination of presentation and knife skills.
