Psoriasis is a skin problem that causes skin cells to grow too quickly, resulting in white or red patches that can be thick, flaky, dry or itchy. Normal skin cells grow gradually and shed every 4 weeks. In psoriasis, new skin cells grow rapidly in a matter of days instead of weeks. They build up and form thick patches called “plaques”. These patches can range in size and often appear on the knees, elbows, scalp, hands and feet. At the Psoriasis Institute in Brisbane the specialist nurse and Dermatologists will assess your psoriasis and work out a treatment plan tailored for your particular psoriasis using a variety of treatments ranging from topical creams and ointments, UV light therapy, oral medication and biologic medications.
